Chapter 7

The two bears ate at Periwinkle's hearth until her shelves stood bare. The big one licked crumbs from the floor. The little one leaned against her leg and looked up, still hungry. Outside, hooves and soft steps sounded in the dark. More were coming. Travelers had followed her trail too. She heard a man's tired cough beyond the door. Her oven held only so many loaves at once, and it was already empty. She opened the door. A young man stood in the clearing, thin and lost, his coat torn by branches. Behind him, three more shapes waited in the trees. He looked past her at the bears by the fire. "Is there food?" he asked. "I followed the bread. There was none left on the last stretch." Periwinkle's heart sank. She had sworn to feed them all. But her one oven baked a dozen loaves in an hour, and here stood a dozen mouths at once. If she fed the man, the bears got nothing more. If she fed the bears, the man walked back into the cold. Someone always left empty. She knelt by the little bear. It had eaten, but only just. The big bear watched her, calm and gentle, its brown eyes soft. It did not lunge for the man's coat or growl at the door. It only waited, as it had waited in the trees. And that gave her the idea. "You are not just hungry," she said to the bears. "You know this forest. You know where the berries grow and where the streams run." She pulled the last cold loaf from the shelf and broke it. She fed half to the man and half to the big bear. "I cannot bake fast enough for everyone. But I do not have to feed everyone from the oven." She led them all outside. She showed the big bear the empty basket and pointed to the dark trees. "Take him to the stream. Show him the berries. Bring him back when the next loaves are done." The big bear rose. It nudged the young man's hand with its nose and stepped toward the trees. The man hesitated, then followed. The little bear trotted after them. Periwinkle watched them go. The forest itself could feed the lost while her oven caught up. The bears knew the land better than she ever would. She would bake, and they would guide, and no one would stand at her door with nothing. She went inside and mixed a fresh batch of dough. Through the window she saw the big bear leading the tired man toward the water, the little one bounding at their heels. For the first time, her small oven felt large enough. But she needed the bears to keep coming back, and she did not yet know if wild creatures would return to a door that only sometimes had bread.
