Chapter 1

Persephone knelt in the wheat and pretended to weed. Her mother stood twenty paces off, arms folded, watching. She had been watching for three days now, ever since Persephone asked a passing shade about the road down. Demeter did not ask questions. Demeter only waited for her daughter to bolt so she could catch her by the wrist and drag her back to the fields she was supposed to inherit. Persephone wanted the Underworld. She wanted its quiet halls and its cold king and a crown of her own, not the flower wreath her mother pressed on her every spring. She had heard enough to know the shape of what she wanted. A throne beside Hades. A realm where nothing grew and nothing was expected to. To get there she had to slip a mother who could feel her footsteps through the soil. So she gave her mother something else to feel. Persephone walked to the pond at the edge of the field, slow, hands full of grain. A black swan drifted at the reeds. She fed it from her palm until it trusted her, then broke a stalk and tied it to the swan's foot with a strip torn from her sash. She whispered the direction she wanted. The swan beat the water and rose, dragging her scent north across the meadow. Demeter's head turned. Demeter's head followed. Demeter began to walk. Persephone ran south. The ground opened where the shade had told her it would, a split in the rock behind a stand of black poplars. A dog waited at the bottom of the steps. Three heads, brown coat spotted black, six yellow eyes fixed on her at once. She did not run. She held out the last of the grain and let the middle head sniff her hand. The left head huffed. The right head licked her wrist. Behind the hound, a man in a dark robe stood on the last stair, blue hair bright in the dim, beard trimmed close, watching her the way her mother had watched her but without the grip behind it. "You came down on your own," Hades said. Persephone wiped her palm on her dress and stepped past the dog. "I have until sundown before she notices the swan is only a swan," she said. "Ask me in."
