Chapter 3

Persephone folded the wet letter and tucked it inside her robe. Her mother's command was clear. Come yourself. But the gates of the Underworld did not open both ways for the living. If she crossed without a right of passage, she would be lost between worlds. She left the river and climbed the black steps to the palace to find help. Hades met her in the hall. She told him what she needed. He did not argue. He pressed his ring into hot wax on a strip of dark parchment and handed it to her. "A token of safe return," he said. "But a token is not enough. You need a guide who walks both roads." He lifted a small bronze bell and rang it once. The messenger came faster than the sound. Winged sandals touched the marble. He wore gold and tired eyes. "You called." He looked at Persephone, then at the parchment. "A wife crossing out. The hound will smell the living on you. He will tear that scent in half if you walk alone. Souls who try this without me end up like a moth pinned to a window. Halfway through. Still moving." She flinched. He softened, but only a little. "Bring the ferryman's coin. Bring your husband's seal. Walk behind me. Do not look back at the dog." He tapped his staff on the floor. "We go now. Your mother's cold is climbing the stairs." They went down to the river first. The ferryman pressed a worn coin into her palm without a word. The dark skiff rocked behind him in the fog. Then they climbed the long road to the great doors. The three-headed hound rose from the stones. Six red eyes locked on her. The snakes around its neck hissed. The messenger lifted his staff and spoke a single short word. She held up the seal. She held up the coin. The middle head lowered. The side heads turned away. The doors groaned open on a thin gray light. Persephone stepped through. The cold above hit her face like a slap. She was out. She was whole. Behind her, the doors shut with a heavy sound, and she understood she could not go back through them alone. The messenger pointed at the frozen road ahead. "She is that way," he said. "Walk."
