Chapter 1

Pesky Mosquito wanted one thing: to prove not all mosquitoes were pests. But every time she buzzed close to another bug, a hand or a wing swatted her away. She hovered over the marsh, watching a dragonfly flick her off like dust. "I only wanted to talk!" she called. Nobody stayed to listen. Nobody ever did. The problem was simple. She had no safe place to gather bugs and speak. In open air, she was a target. Near the garden, a green fly swatter waited on a fence post, its looped head ready to snap. She had seen it slap two beetles flat that morning. As long as she spoke in the open, every bug expected the swatter next. So she needed walls. She flew low over the murky water, past knotted roots and tall reeds. Then she saw it. A tiny house stood on wooden stilts at the marsh edge. Its thatched roof drooped with moss. A little round door sat under a crooked horseshoe. It was mosquito-sized. It was empty. It was hers if she claimed it. Pesky darted inside. Dust drifted from the rafters. The floor sagged but held. Best of all, four walls meant no swatter could reach a bug within. If she brought others here, they could not flee at the first buzz. They would have to stay and hear her out. She got to work. She dragged a reed across the doorway as a bench. She fanned stale air out the window. Then she flew back to the marsh and buzzed near a cluster of gnats. "I found a spot," she said. "No swatters. No hands. Just walls and a place to sit." The gnats froze, ready to bolt. "Come see. Then leave if you want." Curiosity beat fear. Three gnats followed her across the water. A beetle trailed behind, still twitching at every sound. They landed on the cottage porch and peered through the door. Inside, no cat waited. No swatter loomed. The beetle stepped in first. The gnats crowded after. Pesky perched on her reed bench and faced them. For the first time, no one swatted. No one fled. They watched her, wary but still. "I'm Pesky," she said. "And I want to tell you something. Not every mosquito is a pest." The beetle snorted. "You bite. That's the whole job." "Some of us don't," she said. "Some of us do other things. Give me a chance to show you." The gnats traded glances. They did not leave. They did not swat. But the beetle folded his legs and stared. "Prove it," he said. "Words are cheap. Show us one mosquito that helps, not hurts." Pesky had her walls now. She had an audience. But she had no proof. She had only a promise she did not yet know how to keep.
