Chapter 1

Pete Sunval had one hour to end a feud his grandfather started. Across the long table sat the woman from the rival clan, arms folded, eyes flat. Two generations of blood lay between their families. Now the elders had ordered them to write a peace treaty together. Pete straightened his sash and opened with his cleanest offer. Shared water rights. Fair borders. He spoke each word like a coin laid on velvet. The woman did not move. "You sound like a contract," she said. "Not a person." Pete tried again. He listed numbers. He named the villages that would benefit. Every sentence came out smooth and cool. The more he polished, the harder her face set. She began to shake her head at each point before he finished it. He watched his careful plan die in the flat line of her mouth. He knew then that his words were the problem. His clan trained him to be exact. But exact felt cold to her, and cold felt like contempt. If he kept reading offers off the page, she would refuse every one until the hour ran out. Then the elders would blame him, and the killing would go on. Pete stopped talking. He looked around the room for something honest. On the sill sat a single flower in a plain cup, its deep red petals open around a pale glowing center. He recognized it. His mother grew the same bloom behind the family manor. He stood, crossed the room, and set the flower on the table between them. "My mother grows these," he said. His voice cracked on the word mother, and he let it. "She lost two brothers to your clan. She still plants these every spring. She says a garden doesn't care whose side you're on." The woman stared at the crimson petals. Her arms came loose from her chest. "My father grows them too," she said quietly. "By the east wall. He never told me why." "Maybe for the same reason," Pete said. For the first time she leaned toward him instead of away. "Say the water terms again," she said. "But say them like you mean them. Not like you're reading them." Pete pushed the papers aside. He told her about the dry summer that killed his uncle's herd. He told her what a shared well would mean to a child in either village. She listened. When he finished, she uncrossed her legs and picked up a pen. "I'll bring this to my elders," she said. "Not because your numbers are good. Because I believe you want it." She wrote her name at the bottom of a single clause. One line, agreed. The rest of the treaty still stood empty. But as she reached for the door, she paused. "Understand something," she said. "My elders trust nothing signed by a Sunval. You'll have to prove this flower isn't a trick."
