Chapter 1

Peter Parker had loved a girl who no longer knew his name. The spell that saved her life had erased him from her memory, and he had let it happen to keep her safe. Now she stood ten feet away in a coffee shop line, and she looked right through him. Calliope Stark. Tony Stark's daughter. His girlfriend, once. She ordered the same drink she always had, extra cinnamon, and Peter's chest ached because she didn't know why she liked it. He had rehearsed a hundred openings. All of them felt like traps. Say too much and he'd sound insane. Say too little and she'd walk out the door forever. He didn't know if any piece of him still lived somewhere inside her. Guessing wrong could push her away for good. A voice cut in beside him. "You're staring. It's a bad look for a hero." Tony Stark stood there in a dark suit, the reactor in his chest glowing faint blue under his shirt. He held two coffees and offered one to Peter. He was Calliope's father, the man who had helped cast the spell, the man who watched Peter grieve in silence for weeks. "She's happy, kid," Tony said, quieter now. "That was the whole point." "I know," Peter said. "I just need to know if there's anything left." Tony studied him. Then he pulled something from his pocket. A tiny metal dragon, small enough to hide in a fist. "You made her this. She kept it after the spell and doesn't remember why. She won't throw it away." He pressed it into Peter's hand. "That's your answer. Something stuck." Peter's fingers closed around the cold little dragon. His plan formed fast. Not a confession. Not the whole truth. One test. He crossed the room. Calliope glanced up, polite and blank. He set the dragon on the counter beside her cup. "I think you dropped this," he said. She looked at it. Her hand rose to her jacket pocket, felt the shape already there, then stopped. Her eyes moved from the dragon on the counter to the one she carried. Two of them. Confusion crossed her face, then something older and deeper, like a word on the tip of her tongue. "That's weird," she whispered. "I have one exactly like this." She stared at him. "Do I know you?" Peter's heart slammed. "Do you?" She held his gaze too long. "No," she said slowly. "But I feel like I should." Then she grabbed her cup and left, fast, shaken. The door swung shut behind her. Peter stood there holding both dragons now, hers left forgotten on the counter. Something was left inside her. He had proof. But he had also scared her, and she was gone. Winning her back would mean chasing a girl who had just decided he frightened her. Behind him, Tony sighed. "Well," Tony said. "You definitely got her attention."
