Chapter 1

Petra Thorn spread her journal across the cabin table and waited for someone to believe her. Three travelers had passed through the Riverside Cabin that morning. All three had looked at her maps and laughed. She wanted to prove the lost people of Gnarlroot were real, that stone paths once ran under every root. But her drawings were loose scraps, each grove sketched on its own page, none connected. To a stranger, they read as the scribbles of a madwoman. She flattened one page with her scratched hands. A ring of carved stumps. On the next page, a sunken well. On the next, a wall swallowed by moss. Each find was true. She had walked to all of them, bled on their thorns. But nothing told a reader how to get from one to the next. No scale. No shared edge. Just islands of ink, floating. Vera Junco set a bowl of soup beside the journal without being asked. She ran the cabin, and she knew every trail in Gnarlroot better than anyone alive. She studied the scattered pages for a long moment. "These are real places," she said. "I've stood at that well." Petra grabbed her arm. Here was proof, finally, someone who could vouch for her. But Vera shook her head. "Real doesn't matter if nobody can follow them. You've got the pieces. You've got no thread." Petra's throat went tight. Vera was right, and that was worse than the laughter. From the woodshed doorway, a girl in an oversized red jacket had been watching. Sawdust still clung to her braids. She'd been sleeping in that shed a week, too restless to stay put anywhere. Sable Grinn crossed the room and fanned the loose pages out like a card trick. "You draw these in the order you found them," she said. "That's your mistake. Walk a tightrope that way and you fall." "Then what order?" Petra snapped. Sable tapped the ring of stumps, then the well. "Same tree shows up here and here. See the split trunk? That's your anchor." She slid the two pages together until the trunks matched. The paths lined up. Suddenly two scraps became one map. Petra stared. For an hour the three of them worked. Sable found the shared landmarks. Petra named the groves. Vera corrected the distances from memory. By lamplight, six loose pages became one clean sheet, stitched grove to grove, every path linked. Petra held it up. For the first time, her discoveries made sense to someone else's eyes. The lost civilization had a shape now. Vera traced the new map and stopped at its eastern edge, where Petra had drawn an arrow into blank paper. "That's the ridge," Vera said. Her voice dropped. "Whatever's past there, I won't take you." She rolled the map closed. "And that's exactly where your atlas has to go."
