Chapter 1

Phil wanted to fly the wild stretch beyond the town's edge. No pilot had crossed it alone. Miles of forest and rock waited out there, with no roads and no rescue. He had studied the maps for months. His plane sat in the airfield hangar, sleek and small, polished bright. But when he ran the engine that morning, it coughed twice and died. He tried again. The plane sputtered, caught, then dropped to a rough idle. Oil pooled dark beneath the belly. Phil killed the switch and sat still. A short hop was one thing. But over that wilderness, one failure meant landing where no one could find him. The plane was not ready. He was not ready. He knew only one place that might help. On the far side of town stood an old barn. A retired mechanic had worked there for years before he closed the doors. People still spoke of his hands, how he could hear a bad bearing from across a yard. Phil towed his plane there on a borrowed trailer and knocked. The mechanic came out wiping grease on a rag. He was old, stooped, slow. He looked at the plane a long time before he spoke. "You mean to fly this over the back country," he said. It was not a question. "That engine would quit you halfway. Then you'd be a story people tell." Phil told him the truth. He wanted the first solo crossing. He had the fuel, the maps, the nerve. He lacked only an engine he could trust. The mechanic circled the plane, tapped a valve, pulled a plug, sniffed the oil. He grunted at each thing he found. "Cracked fuel line," he said. "Worn plugs. A fouled valve. Small parts. But small parts kill pilots." He set down his rag. "Two days. You help me. I don't do this alone anymore." For two days Phil worked in the barn. He handed tools, held lights, learned the sound of a healthy engine. The mechanic replaced the fuel line and cleaned the valve. They flushed the oil and set new plugs. On the second evening, the engine started clean and held a steady roar. No cough. No smoke. Phil felt the whole plane settle into a smooth, even hum. The mechanic wiped his hands and stepped back. "She'll carry you across now," he said. "But listen close. I fixed the engine. I can't fix the weather, and I can't fix what's out there. Nobody's mapped that ground for a reason." Phil towed the plane back to the airfield that night. It was airworthy at last. The one thing that had held him back was gone. He fueled the tanks and filed his route with the tower. His crossing was set for dawn. Now the danger was no longer his machine. It was the uncharted land itself, waiting for him at first light.
