Chapter 1

Pip Paddock wanted to be the youngest apprentice the Grand Archmage had ever chosen, but first he had to stop setting himself on fire. He stood in the copying room, sleeve smoking, and beat the flames out against his knee. The spell had worked. That was the problem. He could copy any fire-word in an hour, but he never learned to hold it after. His owl watched from the shelf, ink-dark stains across her pale feathers. She clicked her beak once, the sound she made when he'd been foolish. Behind him, the bear cub whimpered and pushed its nose under a fallen scroll. "I know," Pip said. "Too fast again." He smoothed the burned page on the ink-stained desk. The trick wasn't the words. He saw that now. Every spell he'd copied told him to feel the shape of the fire before he called it. He always skipped that part. He wanted the result, not the practice. So he tried it the slow way. He lit one candle, only one, and did not reach for the words. He held his hand near the flame and made himself feel its size. Small. Steady. He learned the weight of it before he touched it with magic. Then he whispered the fire-word, soft as a page turning. The candle flame leaned toward his palm. It did not leap. It did not spread. It moved because he asked it to, and it stopped when he stopped asking. Pip held the small light in the air between his fingers. His hand did not shake. His sleeve did not smoke. The owl clicked again, a different sound this time. The bear cub crept out from under the scroll and pressed against his leg. Pip set the flame back on the wick. He had done it. Not copied it. Done it. For the first time the fire had obeyed him instead of escaping him. He looked at his singed sleeve and laughed, because now the burns felt like the last of an old problem, not the start of a new one. Then the water jug on the far shelf began to steam. Pip hadn't touched it. He hadn't spoken a word. But the slow way had opened something in him, some door he didn't know how to close. The steam thickened. Inside the jug the water churned, and a shape moved through it, long and coiling, scales the color of river and flame. The owl screamed and flew to the rafters. The bear cub backed away. Pip stared at the thing rising from his water jug and understood, cold in his stomach, what he had really done. He had stopped rushing his magic. And by holding it steady at last, he had called something that answered.
