Chapter 1

Poogie rested on his rock, watching the morning light catch the moss on his left side. His ferry dream had lived in his mind for seasons now—a service connecting every corner of the swamp, steady and sure as the current itself. He'd imagined it taking years to build, maybe longer. Time didn't worry him. But someone had strung up a zip line between two ancient trees across the main channel—weathered ropes and rusted pulleys creaking in the breeze. A small crowd had gathered near the platform, murmuring about crossing in seconds instead of hours. Poogie slid down from his rock and moved through the reeds toward the trees, his mind already going quiet. The ferry didn't exist yet, but the swamp needed connection now, and he could see three ways to use that zip line's momentum to prove what slowness could offer that speed could not. He found his toolbox wedged behind a cypress root where he'd left it two seasons back. Inside sat coiled rope, a lantern, and his hand-drawn map showing every current and eddy in the swamp. Poogie studied the zip line's landing point—a narrow platform that dumped travelers into shallow water with no clear path forward. He placed his toolbox at the base of the second tree and positioned himself beside it, shell flat and steady. When the next traveler zipped across and splashed down, confused and stuck, Poogie was there, offering the one thing speed couldn't provide: a guide who knew where the water would take them next. By midday, three creatures had chosen his slow drift over the fast drop, and his ferry service had its first route. A checkered flag appeared by sunset, tied to the zip line platform. Yellow and black squares announced races every morning—fastest crossing wins. The crowd grew larger, louder, more excited about speed. Poogie watched from his position at the landing point and didn't move. The racers still splashed down in the same confused spot, and he was still there with his map and his knowledge of the currents. By the end of the week, even the fastest crossers were lining up at his shell for the second half of their journey. The ferry existed now, not because Poogie had rushed, but because the swamp had finally shown him exactly where it was needed most.
