Chapter 1

Princess Polka Dot spread her festival map across the long table and found she could not finish it. She wanted one grand party to join the kingdom's two feuding villages under a single pattern of dots. But the two villages had hated each other for years, and nobody could tell her why. Without knowing the first cause of their quarrel, she could not plan a single banner. She stared at the blank half of the map and tapped her pen. Her kitten hopped onto the table and batted a bright yellow decoration toward her. The round paper cutout spun and stopped. Princess Polka Dot picked it up. On its back, in faded ink, someone had written a name and a date from twenty years ago. She did not recognize the name. But the kitten pawed at a second cutout, a pink one, tucked under the map's edge. She turned the pink cutout over. Another name. Another date, the very same day. Two names, two villages, one afternoon long past. Her breath caught. These were not just decorations. Someone had saved them. Princess Polka Dot ran to the oldest steward in the castle, cutouts in hand. She set them on his lap and asked what the names meant. The old man's face went still. He told her the truth at last. Twenty years ago, both villages had built dotted floats for a shared parade. On the day of judging, each village swore the other had stolen its design. The yellow float and the pink float looked nearly the same. No one could prove who copied whom. The friendship broke. The parade never happened again. "So that was it," Princess Polka Dot said. "A stolen pattern. Or a shared one." The steward nodded. He led her down a dusty hall to a locked room. Inside stood the lost parade itself, still whole after all these years. A long line of dotted shapes, bright and evenly spaced, arranged like one happy creature made of many colors. The yellow dots and pink dots sat side by side, clearly built by two hands working together. Neither village had stolen anything. They had made it as one. Princess Polka Dot pressed her hand to the old floats. Now she knew the spark. The quarrel began with a lie neither side could disprove. But the parade told the truth. She could show both villages this proof and end the feud for good. Then she looked closer and her stomach dropped. Each dotted shape bore a small carved mark, half yellow, half pink. A single festival would not be enough. To end this, she had to bring both villages here, into this room, to face the thing they had buried. And the two mayors had not spoken a word to each other in twenty years.
