Chapter 48

The two kings knelt on the cold floor. Their sons breathed again on the wooden boards. But one son still shook with fever, his skin too pale. The moon had brought him back. It had not yet made him whole. Willowyn knelt beside him and pressed her palm to his brow. "He needs more," she said. "Carry him outside. Into the moon." The kings obeyed at once. They lifted their sons and laid them on the grass beneath the open sky. Willowyn stood over the weak one and reached again for the moonlight. It poured down through her hands, cold and bright. She fed it into his chest. His breathing steadied. The gray left his cheeks. When he opened his eyes a second time, they were clear. Kai stood behind her the whole time. He had followed her across the pine forests and stood at every table she faced. Now he watched her heal in the moonlight without swaying once. "You are stronger than the sea today," he said quietly. Both kings rose. The first king walked to the second and held out his hand. "We buried nothing," he said. "There is nothing left to blame you for." The second king took the hand and gripped it hard. The war was over. Their sons lived, and there was no toll worth more than that. They turned to Willowyn together. Servants brought chests and set them at her feet. One king opened a lid heavy with gold coins. The other showed silver, bright as the moon that had saved his son. "Take it," the first king said. "It is nothing beside what you gave us." Willowyn bowed her head. She had come to stop a war, not to grow rich. But she took the gold and silver, because refusing would shame them. Kai loaded the chests onto the griffin's silver saddle. The pale animal shifted its wings, patient in the grass. Then the second king stepped close. He held something bigger than a puppy in both hands. Not gold. An egg, pale and speckled, larger than any ordinary egg. "My father found this in a cave, many years ago," he said. "It has never hatched. I do not know what sleeps inside." He placed it in Willowyn's arms. It was cool and heavier than stone. "But if any life remains in it, perhaps a moon princess could wake it." Willowyn held the egg against her chest. Through the shell she felt something. Not warmth. A slow, faint beat, like a heart waiting under the moon. Her breath caught. Kai looked at the egg, then at her face. "Willowyn," he said. "It moved." She had healed two men and ended a war. Now she held a thing that no healing had ever touched. Whatever slept inside had waited longer than she had been alive. And it was beginning to stir.
