Chapter 8

The dusk visits became her secret joy. Each evening Willowyn carried clean water to the coast and stole a few words with Kai. She woke each morning lighter, and each night she counted the hours until she could go again. But the coast held too many eyes. The guard drifted closer some nights. She needed a place to speak without fear. That evening Kai met her at the water's edge and tipped his head toward the rocks. "Come," he whispered. "I found somewhere better." He led her past the barrels to a hollow behind a fall of vines, hidden from the path. The guard's lantern shrank to a dot. Here no one could see them. Willowyn's heart beat fast. For the first time she could speak freely. Then his cloak moved. A small white head slipped out from the folds. A sleek little minx blinked at her, fur pale as moonstone, its dark eyes bright. Willowyn gasped. "She is beautiful," she breathed. Kai smiled and lifted the creature from his shoulder. "Hold her, if you like." He set the minx in Willowyn's cupped hands. It curled against her palms, warm and light, and pressed its nose to her thumb. Willowyn laughed, low and delighted. She had held her green fox a thousand times, but never a wild thing that trusted so easily. "How did you find her?" she asked. "On the crossing," Kai said. He sat against the rock. "A storm broke our second ship. We pulled crates from the water for days. One crate held her, half drowned. The others wanted to throw her back. I dried her in my shirt and fed her by hand." He stroked the minx's back with one finger. "She would not leave me after that. She has crossed every sea I have." Willowyn watched him speak. She thought of the workers stranded on the coast, of kingdoms broken by storms and wars he described each night. This mortal had saved one small life when it would have been easier not to. That was the kind of mercy she dreamed of carrying between all the lands. "You saved her," she said. "When no one else would." "She was worth saving." Kai met her eyes. "Most things are, once you look closely." Something shifted in Willowyn's chest. These visits were no longer only about the world beyond her walls. They were about him. She could no longer pretend otherwise. The minx yawned and burrowed back into Kai's cloak. The lantern light swung toward the vines. Willowyn stood fast, brushing sand from her gown. "I must go." She pressed her hand once to Kai's, then slipped back to the path before the guard could turn. That night she did not sleep. She had found something she wanted more than escape, and it lived inside the very cage she meant to break.
