Chapter 3

Six trolls sat on the muddy bench. They watched Prisma. She had chalk in her hand and no lesson in her head. She had planned to teach the curtsy today. But the small troll already tapped her feet. The big troll picked mud from his knuckles. Prisma knew the look. In a moment they would slide off the bench and go back to the reeds. She had to give them something now, or she would lose them. She stalled. She turned to the board. Her hand shook. Behind her, the bench creaked. One troll stood up. Then a sound came through the open door. A soft flutter, like wet leaves in wind. A cluster of tiny kittens flew into the schoolroom. Each one had wide wings colored like a rainbow. They looped over the tables. They chased each other through the light. The trolls froze. The big troll pointed. The small troll gasped and reached up. Prisma dropped her chalk. This was it. This was the lesson. She did not need a plan. She needed the room to hold their eyes, and the kittens did that for her. "Sit still," Prisma said. "Very still. If you rush at them, they fly off. Grace means moving slow, so a fragile thing feels safe near you." The small troll pulled her hand back. She held it flat and low. A kitten drifted down. It landed on her muddy palm. Its wings folded. The small troll did not breathe. "See?" Prisma whispered. "You held still. So it trusted you." One by one, the trolls opened their hands. They sat straight without being told. They kept their feet quiet. The big troll leaned forward slow and careful. A kitten touched down on his thick finger. His whole face changed. He looked at the tiny wings, then at Prisma, as if she had given him something. Prisma moved along the bench. She showed them how to bow their heads gently so the kittens would not startle. She showed them how to open a hand like an offering. She was not teaching them the curtsy from her books. She was teaching them stillness, and softness, and how to hold something small. Her slug crept along the bench rail, its glitter collar winking. A kitten landed on its shell and rode there. The small troll laughed, but she kept her body still. She had learned the rule already. The kittens rose together and flew back out the door. The room went quiet. The trolls stayed on the bench. Nobody left. They looked at their own open hands, then at Prisma, and waited for more. Prisma picked up her chalk. She had held them. She had taught her first real lesson in grace, and they had wanted it. But she saw the truth now. The kittens had done it, not her plan. Tomorrow they would come back hungry for the same wonder. And she had no kittens to call.
