Chapter 1

Puff wanted only one thing: to find the giant creatures whose shed hairs had clumped together and made them alive. So Puff crept along the baseboard, following a strand of long brown hair, until sticky threads seized their whole soft body. A web. Puff tugged. The silk held. It stretched across the corner above a stack of cheese wheels, gold and cracked and smelling of milk. Puff struggled harder, and the whole web shivered. That shiver called it. The spider dropped down on a single line. It was bigger than Puff. Eight eyes shone black. Its legs tapped the silk, testing the catch, deciding where to bite first. Puff was made of fluff and dust. To the spider, Puff was dinner. Puff twisted and pulled, but the threads only wrapped tighter. Panic loosened tiny fibers from their body. That gave Puff an idea. Dust bunnies aren't solid. They're loose. They come apart. So Puff stopped fighting the web. Instead Puff pushed outward, forcing their body to spread thin, letting clumps of fluff peel away and stick to the silk. The spider lunged. Its fangs closed on a wad of loose dust, not on Puff. Puff squeezed the last of their shrinking self through a gap in the threads and fell. The drop was long. Puff hit the top cheese wheel and rolled down the tower, bouncing from ledge to ledge. Each landing knocked more of Puff loose. By the time Puff reached the floor, half their body was gone, snagged in the web above. Above them, the spider ate the stolen fluff and looked down, still hungry, still watching. Puff scrambled under the bottom cheese wheel and pressed flat in the dark. Something small brushed against them. Puff flinched, then recognized the rounded shape and the little bristled legs. It was their dust mite. The tiny pet had followed Puff the whole way, waiting under the cheese. "You stayed," Puff whispered. The mite pressed close, warm and steady. Puff looked back at the web. Their lost fluff hung there, out of reach. Puff felt lighter now, and not in a good way. Half of what they were still swayed in the spider's trap. But among that trapped fluff, snagged on the silk, was the long brown hair Puff had been following. The clue to the giant creatures dangled right beside the hungry spider. Puff could not climb back up. Not alone. Not small. But the strand of hair had come from somewhere. It had a source. And if Puff followed the floor instead of the web, the source might lead the same way. Puff gathered what body remained and turned toward the dark space beyond the cheese. The mite scuttled at their side. Behind them, the spider began to rebuild its broken web, patient, ready to catch whatever came next. Puff moved on, smaller than before, and still hunting the truth about the giants.
