Chapter 14

The choice still hung in the cave. Frosty waited on the blue air, wings loose in the cold. Glaciana would not walk toward a hidden crystal on a curse-maker's word alone. She needed to know what the fairy wanted, and whether her promise was a snare. So she stepped closer and asked the one question that mattered. "Why did you freeze my kingdom?" Glaciana said. "Tell me that first. Then I'll decide if I follow you." Victor moved to his wife's side. He kept one hand flat on her back, steady, saying without words that he stood with her. Kira crouched near the wall, tail low. Her pupils had narrowed to thin slits, fixed on the small figure. One wrong move and the snow leopard would spring. Frosty did not answer fast. Her wings drooped, the way they did in warmth or hurt. "An elder found me broken in the snow," she said. "Both wings snapped. She mended them, slow, over many days. Then she showed me the Snowheart." Her voice dropped, careful now. "She told me it kept the mountain warm. Men came to dig it out and sell it. I froze the whole range to stop them. I did not know how to freeze only the crystal." Kira's ears flicked. "Three winters. To guard one stone." "I was afraid," Frosty said, blunt. "I held the cold too long. I could not let it go." Glaciana watched the fairy's grey eyes. She had spent years reading faces across her court, sorting the honest from the smooth. Frosty did not perform grief. She stated it and stopped. That plainness was the first thing that rang true. "Then show me you mean to end it," Glaciana said. "Not with words. Melt one thing. Here. Now." Frosty's chin lifted. She spread her fingers toward the frozen wall. A patch of ice thinned, cracked, and ran to water down the stone. The pool spread at Kira's feet. The maid stared, then looked at Glaciana, the hurt in her face easing into something like belief. "You held the cold," Glaciana said. "You can also give it back." "I can guide," Frosty said. "I cannot break the Snowheart. Only you have that power. That is why I need the queen." Glaciana felt Victor's hand press once against her spine. She looked at him, then at Kira, then at the water still spreading on the floor. The fairy had passed her test. The promise was real. "Then lead us," Glaciana said. "All three of us walk behind you." Frosty turned to a dark seam at the back of the cave. "The Snowheart lies deeper in the mountain," she said. "Past the ice that fights back. It will test you, Queen. Not me." Glaciana stepped over the meltwater. The path had opened. Now she had to survive it.
