Chapter 9

Victor stood in Glaciana's doorway with snow on his cloak. He had bowed and named his apology. Now he waited, hand still on his chest, to see what she would do. Glaciana did not answer at once. She let the silence stretch. She had feared he wanted furniture, not a wife. His two-line letter had cracked that fear open. But a letter was ink. She needed to see his face. She reached out and touched his cheek. His skin was cold from the courtyard. She held her hand there and let her thumb move once across his jaw. Then she smiled. "I forgive you," she said. "But I want to hear it from you now. Not from Kira. Not from paper." Victor straightened. He met her eyes the way he had across the ballroom. "I struggle to say what I feel," he said. "That is my fault, not yours. I will not hide behind wagon lists again." He paused, and the pause cost him. "I want you. The wedding. The life. All of it." It was plain and short, in his clipped way. It was also the most he had ever given her aloud. Glaciana pulled him inside and shut the door. "Then swear it," she said. "I swear," he said. "When something sits in my chest, I will tell you. Even when I don't have the words. Especially then." She believed him. The tightness she had carried for days loosened at last. She walked to her desk and closed both ledgers, the one of plans and the one of his letters. "Good," she said. "Because we are done planning this on paper. We plan it here. Together." They sat by the desk and worked through the evening. Victor no longer talked only of carts and guards. He asked which banners she loved. He asked where her people should stand. When he pushed a detail she disliked, she said so, and he listened. When she reached too far, he named the limit and stopped, the way he always did. They argued once, over the feast order, and laughed about it after. It felt like a marriage already. The wedding came within the week. Glaciana stood before her court in the ice halls of the Azure Frostkeep. Blue and white banners hung from the pale stone. Victor stood beside her in his sapphire crown, and he spoke his vows clearly, without hiding. Her people watched their queen take a king at last. When the ceremony ended, fresh powder snow began to fall over the mountain, soft and clean, blessing the joined kingdoms. Glaciana looked up at the falling snow and felt joy. Then she looked closer. The flakes fell thick and fast, colder than any spring day should bring. Her old fear stirred. The unnatural cold that had gripped her lands for three winters had not lifted for her wedding. It had come to watch, but not to danger anyone.
