Chapter 4

The seal held for three days. On the fourth, Icilia woke to a sound like ice under a boot. She crossed the frozen ballroom to the Mirror. Inside the silver, the spring spark pulsed. Pink light beat against her frost, warm and stubborn. A hairline crack split the glass above it. The spark had not died. It fought her cold from within, and each pulse pushed the fracture wider. If she could not smother its warmth, the glass would break again and loose it into her forest. She pressed both palms to the Mirror and drove frost into the crack. The spark flared. Her frost met its warmth and steamed. The crack grew a finger's length. Cold alone would not win. The spark burned like a living thing, and living things do not freeze quietly. A reflection formed beside her own. Icilia turned. Snow White stood in the ballroom, red gown dark against the pale ice. Icilia had borne this daughter and lost her to the glass and the blood she loved. They had not spoken in a long age. "Your castle is cold," Snow White said. She looked at the Mirror, not her mother. "You have something alive in there." "It is mine to hold." "It's cracking your glass." Snow White stepped closer. Her red eyes moved over the fracture. "I know cracks. Mine spread too." She did not explain. She rarely did. Icilia watched her daughter study the spark. Six hundred years had made Snow White read glass the way others read faces. "You want something," Icilia said. "I want to know if the same thing broke us both." Snow White pointed at the pink light. "You can't freeze that. Warmth doesn't die from cold. It dies from a colder truth." She met her mother's eyes. "Show it itself." Icilia understood. The Mirror did not judge. It reflected. She had aimed frost at the spark. She had never aimed the Mirror's own power inward, at the thing it held. She turned her will on the spark and made the glass reflect it. The pink light saw what it was: not spring, but a single stolen ember, cut from its season, small and alone. The spark's own truth pressed back on it. It shrank. Its warmth folded inward, chilled by knowing itself. The pulse slowed. The crack stopped spreading. The frost closed over the spark and set it hard, dim and still. Icilia lowered her hands. The seal held clean now, frozen by cold and by the spark's own reflection. "You froze it," Snow White said. "With the truth, not the frost." "Yes." Icilia looked at her daughter. "Why come to me now?" Snow White was already turning away. "Because something broke the first mirror. And you just showed me the queen who knows how they hold." She reached the ballroom door. "When I need yours, I'll come back." The spark lay quiet. But now another owed her a debt, and this one had teeth.
