Chapter 1

Queen Topazariah learned she would marry the sapphire king on the same morning she learned he had never smiled. The betrothal was sealed before her birth, she read now, her wings scattering gold dust across the letter. Two forests would join. Her topaz woods would bind to his cold blue court. She had no say in it, and neither had he. She stood in her crystal castle and watched her otter slide across the golden grass below. The little creature glittered when it moved, chasing a flock of purple bunnies that left sparks in the air. Her people laughed. They believed the marriage would bring peace. Topazariah wanted peace too. But she wanted something harder to name. She had never met a man who would not smile. In her forest, joy came easily. It grew like the blooms outside her window, giant flowers cut from faceted crystal, glowing gold and blue at once. She touched one petal. It was warm. Everything here was warm. She had heard his court was dark, and his face darker. "He will never love me," she told the otter. "A treaty is not love." The otter blinked up at her. Then it nudged the crystal bloom cluster with its nose. The blue flowers in it caught the light, and Topazariah understood. Even here, in her golden woods, a piece of his blue had already taken root. Someone long ago had planted it, hoping the two forests might grow together. She made her choice then. She would not marry a stranger and mourn a marriage of paper. She would win him. She would make the solemn king smile, or she would learn why he could not. Topazariah called for her fastest messengers. The purple bunnies gathered at her feet, twitching, ready to run. She knelt and spoke to them. "Carry my word to the sapphire king," she said. "Tell him his bride is coming early. Tell him I do not want his forest. I want to see his face." The bunnies bolted. They streaked across the golden grass, trailing sparks, and vanished toward the blue border. There was no calling them back. The message was sent. Her advisors would call it reckless. A queen did not summon herself to a strange court unasked. She did not warn a king she meant to study him. But Topazariah had spent her whole life being promised to someone. Now she would meet him on her own terms. She gathered the crystal blooms in her arms, blue mixed with gold. Her otter climbed onto her shoulder. Her wings lifted, spilling dust across the shimmering grass. She flew toward the dark forest, and she did not slow. By nightfall the sapphire king would know she was coming. And whatever waited in that cold court, Topazariah had already sealed her own fate. The treaty had made her a bride. She meant to make herself something more.
