Chapter 6

They climbed until the trees thinned and the wind bit hard. Raven led Whisper to the spot where she had stopped before. Her paw found the low ledge again. She smelled wet stone and old smoke. She smelled the ghost of gray fur. But the scent went nowhere. The trail died at the ledge, cold as the rock. She swept her nose along the ground and found nothing. "I can't follow it," she said. "It's gone." Whisper sat beside her. His deep voice stayed calm. "You said you smell things from miles off. What else is up here?" Raven lifted her head and let the wind fill her nose. Under the smoke and stone she caught something new. Musk. Living things. Two of them, moving low, not far. She rose. "This way." She found them near a wide wooden platform built into the ridge. A powder-white fox stepped out first. It was lean and worn from travel, its ears swiveling toward her. Behind it came a gray creature, long and low, walking close to the fox's flank. The two moved like they had crossed many miles together. Raven froze. The gray one carried the same scent that had been on her claws. A thin scar marked its shoulder where fur grew back pale. Her stomach turned. "I did that," she said quietly. "In the dark. I thought it was hunting me." The fox watched her, wary but still. The gray creature limped one step forward and sniffed the air toward Raven. It did not run. It looked at her the way you look at something half-remembered. Raven's breath caught. That smell. She had chased it as a kit, running through the dark, and lost it. "You ran beside me," she said. "Years ago. You were the one." The gray creature made a low sound. Not a growl. Whisper pressed his shoulder to Raven's, steadying her the way he had at the pool. "Go slow," he said. Raven crouched low, claws pulled in. She crept onto the platform and stopped an arm's length away. The gray creature let her come. She lowered her nose to its scarred shoulder and breathed. The wound was healing. She had hurt it, but it lived. And it had not forgotten her. "I'm sorry," Raven said. "I found you again and I cut you. I didn't know." The fox stepped closer, calm now, choosing to trust. It leaned against the gray creature, and the gray creature leaned into Raven. For a moment the three of them stood together in the wind. Then the fox turned and looked down the far slope, tail low, waiting. The gray creature followed its gaze. They were leaving, and they wanted Raven to see where. Raven looked at Whisper. She had found the thing she lost. Now it was walking away again, but this time it was asking her to come.
