Chapter 8

The gray creature walked at Raven's side down the far slope. The fox led. Snow thickened under their paws. But Raven felt the creature's ears flick back again. It carried Whisper's scent now, and it had lain against her leg. Still, it had not forgotten the old wound. Its scar caught the pale light with each step. She had cut it once. That fact walked between them like a third animal, and she had no words the creature would understand. "It still doesn't trust me," Raven said. "Not all the way. It remembers what I did." Whisper kept pace behind her. His deep voice stayed low under the wind. "Then let it lead. Don't ask it to forget. Just don't give it a reason to run." Raven slowed. She let the creature move ahead. She kept her claws sheathed, her body loose, her head low. She did not chase. She followed. The creature glanced back once, saw her waiting behind it, and its shoulders dropped. The slope leveled into a hollow ringed with white. There, half-buried in frost, sat an old stump hollowed into a den. Snow draped its top. A dark mouth opened at its base. The fox slipped inside first. The gray creature stopped at the entrance and looked back at Raven. Raven stood still. She would not walk into its home uninvited. Instead she reached into her fur and drew out the small carved charm, the mother cat curled around her kit. Whisper's mother had made it. She set it in the snow at the den's mouth, the way she had laid the handkerchief before. "I'm not here to take your home," she said. "I'm here to know you." The creature limped to the charm. It pressed its nose to the wood and breathed the calm scent worked deep into it. Then it did the thing Raven had waited eight days of climbing to see. It stepped aside. It made room in the den's mouth and waited for her to come in. Raven crept forward and looked inside. The stump's belly was dry and warm. Old leaves lined the floor. And there, pressed into the far wall, she saw a shape she knew from a memory she had carried her whole life. The gray creature settled beside it. This was the thing that had run with her as a kit. This was what she had lost that day, and what her claws had struck when she found it again and did not know it. Raven lay down in the entrance. She did not touch the creature yet. But it did not move away. "I found you," she whispered. "I stopped losing you." Behind her, Whisper settled at the den's edge, his warmth against her back. The creature watched him, then watched her, and lowered its head onto its paws. The fear was gone. But now Raven had to face what she had done to it, and choose how to make it right.
