Chapter 2

Raven stood inside the grove as the shape between the trees faded back into shadow. It let her stay, but it gave her nothing. No roof. No bed. The pale trees glowed cold, and the warm grass turned damp under her boots. She wrapped her arms around herself and understood the first truth of this place. If she wanted to keep the grove, she first had to survive its nights. She walked the ring of trees and searched for cover. Near the far edge she found an opening in black rock. Layered stone rose into a jagged arch, and a low light glowed deep inside. A cave. Shelter from the wind and the wet. She stepped toward it, relieved. Then the ground shook. A huge shape rose from the dark of the arch and blocked the entrance. It stood taller than three men, broad through the chest, covered in shaggy brown fur. Long arms hung past its knees. It smelled of moss and old rain. The creature filled the whole mouth of the cave and stared down at her. Raven froze. This was the cave's keeper, and she had walked straight into its home. It huffed once, a warning. She did not run. Running had never worked at the thorn wall. Instead she thought of the plum, and the satyr, and the trade that had opened the way. "I don't want your cave," she said. Her voice shook. "I want a corner. That's all." The creature did not move. Its eyes narrowed. Raven looked around for something to offer, but her pockets were empty now. She had spent the plum. She had only the coin, and she would not give that up. So she gave work instead. She knelt at the cave's mouth where soft ferns grew thick, their frilled edges silver in the light. She gathered armful after armful and carried them inside, past the huge feet, and pressed them into a dry hollow along the wall. She built a bed. Then she gathered more and heaped them near the creature's own resting spot, a gift of comfort it had not asked for. The creature watched her work in silence. When she finished, it lowered itself to the stone floor with a heavy grunt. It did not chase her out. It turned its broad back and let her keep her corner. Raven sank onto the ferns and let out a long breath. She had a place now, warm and dry, earned by her own hands. She was no longer only a guest at the threshold. She had made room for herself inside the grove. But sleep would not come. The creature breathed slow and deep beside her, and she realized the truth. This cave was not empty land she had claimed. She shared it now. And whatever ruled the grove had watched her bend to another keeper before it had said a single word.
