Chapter 7
Raven stepped toward the black stair. The maker's empty cloth lay behind her. His last word still hung in the cold air: down. She meant to follow it. But the moment her foot touched the top step, a low groan rolled up from the dark. Something had been chained to that stair, and the maker's death had let it loose.
The thing rose to fill the passage. It was a wall of pale flesh, wide as the tunnel itself. Demon heads pushed out from the skin, snapping and wailing. Clawed arms grew from every gap, raking the stone. Red eyes opened all across it. Raven backed up fast. Her only path forward was gone, sealed by a living wall.
Lyra came down beside her, palm flat to the stone. "It's all one creature," she said. Her voice shook. "I feel one heart, buried deep inside it." Mist curled at their feet as Armin stepped up, his dark eyes hard. "I cannot rot what has no death," he said. "My fog does nothing here." A clawed arm shot out. Raven yanked Lyra back. The claws tore the floor where they had stood. Hope drained from her. She had crossed the sea for this, and now the dark had a wall she could not pass.
Then light flared behind them on the stair. Talon dropped from the dark, two katanas drawn. He was Raven's brother, thought dead for five years, and the sight of him steadied her more than any weapon. He landed in a crouch and rose between her and the wall. "Ayla found the stair and sent me down," he said. Above him, Ayla's silver crystal glowed, holding back the shadows.
Lyra grabbed his arm. Her eyes filled. "What about our daughter?" she said.
Talon met her look. "Grandpa is watching her." He set his feet. "Let's do this."
They struck together. Talon cut low, taking a clawed arm at the wrist. Lyra threw ice, and frost cracked across three demon heads. Raven remembered the old rule: claws and red eyes bent to ice, not steel. "Freeze it, then cut it," she called. Lyra coated a stretch of flesh in white rime. Talon's blades shattered the frozen part like glass. Raven slipped into cat form, darted past a swipe, and clawed at the frozen seams to widen them.
The wall shrieked and pulled back. Its heads sank into the skin. Lyra pressed her palm forward one last time. "The heart," she said. Talon drove both katanas through the frozen center. The wall of flesh split down the middle and slid apart. The stair lay open behind it.
Raven shifted back to herself, breathing hard. The path down was clear now. But the fight had told her something worse. "That guarded the feeder," she said. Talon wiped his blades. "Then the feeder knows we're coming." Raven looked into the dark below. Whatever waited there had heard the wall die.
