Chapter 12

The fighting was won. Red bone rode north to the old gathering hall with his beasts and his new warriors behind him. He expected a seat of power. He found a ruin. The great hall where the clans had always met stood half-burned. The roof had fallen in on one side. Snow drifted through broken beams. Scorch marks blackened the doorposts from years of clan war. Berry walked the wreck beside him and shook his head. "You cannot rule six clans from a camp of mud and ash," Berry said. "Give them a throne that looks like a warlord's tent, and they will call you a warlord." Red bone studied the broken hall. The warriors behind him muttered. They had followed a fearless man across the ice. Now they saw the place he meant to rule from, and it was a pile of charred wood. He could feel their respect thin like morning frost. A king needed a seat worthy of the men who knelt to him. This was not it. Red bone did not call for stonemasons. He had none. He turned to his warriors from all six clans. "You each burned part of this hall," he said. "Now you will raise it together." The old chiefs had fought over this ground for years. He put a man from one broken clan beside a man from another, the way he had once paired them at drills. "Rebuild it or sleep in the snow," he told them. No one moved at first. Then Grok the war-brute lifted a fallen beam alone, and the warriors fell to work beside him. They needed timber the ruin could not give them. Red bone found Artemis Wilde at the treeline, the independent hunter who answered to no chief and had tracked his enemies for him. She was skinning a hare, her bow across her back. "You want trees now, not elk," she said, not looking up. "The tall pines stand a day north. The old growth no axe has touched." She wiped her knife on her boot. "I will mark the straightest ones. But I hunt for you. I do not haul your logs." Red bone nodded. Her price was fair, and her eyes missed nothing. The white armored bear dragged the great beams from the north woods. The brown patch over its eye crusted with snow as it hauled logs no team of men could move. The war-moose carried bundles of lumber on its painted back, free of chains now, choosing the work. The crimson hound ran the line and kept the oxen calm. Red bone worked at the center of it, his own axes cutting joints, his own hands setting pegs. The bound chiefs watched from the edge as their former warriors raised a hall for the man who had beaten them. Winter passed into thaw. The hall rose from the ruin. Carved beams climbed toward a steep roof. Painted shields hung along the walls, one from every clan Red bone had taken. Gold caught the light over the great doors. The men did not build a warlord's tent. They built a seat for a king, and they built it with their own hands. When a warrior set the last shield, he stepped back and looked at it like something he had made, not something he had lost. On the first night under the finished roof, Red bone called all six clans inside. Fire filled the long hearth. Berry stood at his shoulder. The three defeated chiefs stood among the crowd, unbound now, with no warriors of their own. Red bone did not kill them. He gave each a bench and a horn of ale. "You fought me for years," he said to the hall. "Now you drink under one roof. There is no king of this clan or that clan. There is one hall, and one people in it." The chiefs who had hated each other for a lifetime sat along the same tables. The warriors pounded the boards and shouted his name. It was not fear in their voices now. It was welcome. Red bone looked down the length of the hall his enemies had built together, and he knew the war was truly over. He had wanted the throne of the warring clans. He had taken it with axes on the ice. But he held it here, in a hall of gold and firelight, because the men who once burned it had chosen to raise it again for him. The frozen clans were no longer six. They were one. And the man with no fear sat at the head of them all, a warlord no more, but a king.
