Chapter 1

Red heard the man before she saw him. A wet groan came through the slats of her gate, the one she had built from three cars and old fence wood and carved with every warning sign she knew. She dropped the bucket she was carrying and ran. Noise was the thing that killed people now. Noise pulled the dead out of the trees for a mile in every direction, and she had built this whole place, every wall and every quiet hinge, to keep one promise to a woman who was already dead: that the living would have somewhere to rest without screaming. She cracked the gate open. A man lay against the cars, his leg torn open from knee to hip, blood soaking the dirt under him. He moaned again, louder, and Red clamped her hand over his mouth. She looked past his shoulder at the treeline. The dead trees there wore moss like wet rags. Between the trunks, shapes were already moving. One. Three. Six. They came slow at first, the way they always did when the sound was still far off, but he was moaning into her palm and they were turning toward the gate. She dragged him inside by the collar and shoved the gate shut with her shoulder. The bar dropped. She knelt over him and pressed both hands down on the leg wound. He bit her glove instead of screaming, which told her he had survived a while out there. A leather roll was tied to his belt. She pulled it free with one hand. Inside was a map, folded and refolded so many times the creases had gone soft. Roads were crossed out in pencil. Safe houses were circled and then crossed out too. He had been walking toward her for a long time. The first body hit the gate. Then another. The wood shook. Red counted the strikes the way she counted everything: out loud, in her head, steady. Eight. Twelve. Too many for her to fight from the wall alone, and the man was still bleeding, and every sound he made would bring more. She had a choice. She could put a knife through his throat and the moaning would stop and the dead would lose interest by morning. Or she could carry him inside, gag him, stitch him, and hope the gate held through the night. She looked at the map in her hand. She looked at his face. Then she hauled him up under the arms and dragged him toward the house, leaving a dark streak behind her in the dirt. Behind her, the gate shuddered under fists that did not tire. She had built this place for one person and lost her before the walls went up. She was not going to lose another at the threshold. By the time she got him through her door, the pounding at the gate had doubled, and she knew the quiet she had built here was already gone.
