Chapter 2
The volunteers gathered at the dive line before the water warmed. Ren took his place among trained guards twice his size. The drill ran down from the rim of the great stone arena, past black volcanic rock, into a trench where the light died. Officers waited on leaping dolphins along the drop, bronze armor gleaming, sealed helmets turned to watch. The deepest marker hung far below, almost invisible. Ren had never dived this low. His village in the Sea of Japan had been shallow and bright. He pressed a hand to his shoulder plate and pushed off.
The cold hit first. Then the weight. Every length deeper squeezed his chest tighter. The other guards fell into a steady rhythm, kicking slow, breathing slower. Ren copied them until his lungs screamed. Halfway down, his vision blurred. The pressure crushed his ribs like a fist. He knew then he had trained his muscles and never his depth. He was going to black out and sink past the marker.
A sea car dropped beside the line, bronze hull glowing. The door opened and Triton leaned out, crown crooked, no business being there at all. "Stop," he called. "You're white. Even for you. Just—get in. I'll say it was my order."
Ren shook his head. Speaking cost too much air. He gripped the line and hung there, shaking. If he climbed into that car, every officer above would see the prince pull his pet from the deep. The gift rank he had refused in the club would arrive anyway, dressed as rescue. The court would laugh. Triton would look weaker, not stronger.
"Go up," Ren forced out. "You're making it worse."
Triton's jaw set. For a breath he looked ready to drag Ren in by the arm. Then he pulled the door shut. The car rose. Ren watched it climb and felt the line steady under his hand.
He stopped fighting the weight. He let his body sink slack, the way the trained guards did, and kicked only when he had to. Breath by breath he dropped. The marker crawled closer. The dark pressed on his eyes. He touched the cold stone of the deepest ring and held it until an officer's horn sounded above.
He surfaced into the muster circle too weak to lift his spear. An officer on a dolphin looked him over, then marked something on a slate. "The rookie reached bottom," he said. "Few trained hands do." He did not smile. He did not need to. Ren had his feat, earned where every officer could see it, and no royal hand on it.
Triton waited at the rim, arms crossed, saying nothing. But a noble beside him had watched the whole dive. Ren saw the noble lean to whisper, eyes flicking from the prince to the gasping guard. The deep had not killed him. It had made him worth talking about, and now the court had something to say.
