Chapter 1

Rosalind stood very still at the edge of the petal-walled house, listening. The soft glow of the rose walls warmed her pale skin, but her tail flicked once, sharp. She had come this far to win the turtle prince's heart, despite a court that had never bent its rule against hoofed kin. Now a whisper had reached her: someone was poisoning the air before she could fill it. The whisperer was Frocklin the cold. She held court in the stone fortress on the hill, where fairy nobles gathered under high ceilings and pretended their gossip was wine. Rosalind had been told the rumors in pieces. That her hooves were unclean. That her interest was a trick. That the prince would be a fool to look twice. Rosalind did not chase. She positioned. She walked up the long castle steps in daylight, hooves clicking on stone, and let every noble see her arrive unhidden. She asked, plainly, for an audience with Frocklin. The hall went quiet. Frocklin came down with a small, cold smile. "You shouldn't be here," Frocklin said. "Say it to my face, then," Rosalind answered. "Everything you've said behind it." She did not raise her voice. She only waited, the way she always waited, and let the watching crowd do the work. Frocklin's smile thinned. Her words, when they came, were smaller than the rumors had been. Pettier. The nobles heard it. Some looked away. Then a short, clear voice spoke from the doorway. "I heard enough on the way in." Prince Shelldon Maritime stepped inside, blue coat dusted from the road. He did not look at Frocklin. He looked at Rosalind. "I came because someone aimed a telescope at my window last night and pointed me toward this room. I'm glad they did." He paused. "You expected me to believe the whispers. I don't." Frocklin left without speaking. The rumor died in that hall, in front of witnesses who would carry the silence farther than they had carried the lie. But Shelldon did not take Rosalind's hand. He only studied her, careful as ever, and said, "They'll try harder now. So will the court." Rosalind understood. She had won this room. She had not yet won him — and the rule still stood, sharper for being defended in public.
