Chapter 3

By dusk, the returned jars still stood under the archway, untouched and watched. Rosalind knew the court was counting days. Every hour Lauren wore hooves and a horn was another hour Shelldon's people called the old rule wise. She had to undo Frocklin's work, and she had to do it before the whisper became law. She took Lauren into the woods at first light. They stopped at a wide cracked mirror set into a frame of dark iron, half-swallowed by vines. Rosalind stood her sister beside her in the glass. Two reflections. One pale and pink-hooved by birth. One pink-haired and newly hooved by spite. "There," Lauren said flatly. "Proof for anyone who wants it. The court will love this picture." They walked on until the trees opened onto a great stone cauldron, rats hung in a line above its mouth like a warning bell. Rosalind had heard the stories. A woman lived past it who knew Frocklin's spells from the inside. The woman who waited there had Rosalind's own face. Same red hair. Same pink hooves. A twin no one at court would name. "You came," the twin said. She did not rise. "That's the count. Two sisters in. One walks out fixed." She held up a small bottle. Dark liquid moved inside it like smoke caught in syrup. "Frocklin's knot, untied. One dose. No second pour." Lauren took the bottle before Rosalind could speak. She uncorked it, looked at her sister once, and drank. The horn cracked first. It fell into her palm like a shed tooth. Her hooves split and softened into feet. She breathed out, long and shaking, and said, "Done." The twin watched without smiling. "He'll know by morning," she said. "He counts too." Rosalind walked Lauren home on two human feet. The court's proof was gone. The rule had lost its living example. But Frocklin would learn the cure had a face, and that face was Rosalind's, worn by someone the court did not know existed yet. She had won her sister back. She had spent a secret to do it.
