Chapter 1

Rose Amara wanted one person in Siltmaw to stay past sundown. So far, nobody had. She lived nowhere. She slept on other people's couches, in back rooms, in the cab of a stalled truck. Everyone let her in for a night. Then their eyes went cold, and she found her bag by the door. In this town, kindness got you robbed or worse. People kept their doors chained and their hearts chained tighter. Rose still smiled at strangers. That was her whole crime. Tonight she walked to the abandoned mall at the edge of town. Storefronts gaped with shattered glass. Broken signs hung by single bolts. Faded letters spelled out shops that had died years ago. Weeds pushed up through the cracked floor tiles. The place scared most people off, which was exactly why Rose came. Nobody fought over ruins. She found a shoe store with three walls still standing. The security gate was bent but movable. She hauled it shut behind her. Inside, she swept broken glass into a corner with a flattened box. She dragged a bench upright. She hung a torn curtain over the doorway. Her hands bled a little from the gate. She did not stop. By midnight she had a room. Small, dim, but hers. She set two candles on the counter and lit them. She spread her one blanket on the bench. For the first time in months, no one could tell her to leave. She sat in the candlelight and listened. Wind moved through the empty halls. Rats scratched somewhere below. Rose was not scared. A locked room she controlled beat a warm house she didn't. Here, she decided who stayed. Then footsteps. Slow, careful, coming down the dark corridor toward her curtain. Rose's chest tightened. She gripped a length of pipe she'd found by the gate. The steps stopped outside her doorway. "I saw the light," a voice said. A man's voice, low and tired. "Didn't think anyone lived here." "I do now," Rose said. "Keep walking." The curtain shifted. He didn't come in. He crouched instead, just outside the candle glow, hands open where she could see them. "Easy. I'm not here to take anything." He set a can of food on the floor and slid it toward her. "You look hungry." Rose stared at the can. Nobody in Siltmaw gave without wanting something back. She kept the pipe raised. But she did not tell him to go again. "You can sit," she said finally. "Outside the curtain. Where I can see you." He sat. The candles held steady. For the first time, someone had stopped at her door and not left. Rose had a place now, and a place meant she could invite. The problem was simpler and far worse than before: she wanted this stranger to stay, and she had no idea if he could.
