Chapter 7

The pale glow rose beneath the pool and stopped at Rose's row of shoots. The spirit was awake and watching. Its light held steady on her hands, then on her face. This was the moment she had crossed the black pines for. She had its full attention at last. But she could not find the words for her wish. The spirit was proud. Ask wrong, and it would twist her words or reject her outright. Luna hovered close, her purple wings tight against her back. The fairy had guided Rose here for a favor, then fought for a garden of her own. Now she stared at the water, still. "Say it," she whispered. "But say it right. It listens for the wrong word." Rose opened her mouth. The wish sat ready in her chest, plain and desperate. She almost begged. She stopped herself. Begging would insult a proud thing. She thought of the flower she gave without asking. She thought of the color the spirit had craved. It did not want a supplicant. It wanted to be admired. So Rose knelt by the shoots and pressed one firm in the black soil. "I made this for you as much as for her," she said. She did not look at the pool. She looked at the green. "You hunger for beauty. I can grow it. Every season, new color at your door, tended by my hands. But a garden needs a gardener who lives. Grant me the one thing I came for, and I will keep this ground bright for you." The glow pulsed. Rose held her breath. She had not named her wish as a want. She had named it as the price of her service. She turned the wish into an offering the spirit could accept without shame. The water shivered. A single fern crown at the pool's edge unfurled all at once, opening wide and green. The spirit's light brushed it, then brushed Rose's wrist, cool as river stone. It did not speak in words. It bent one shoot toward her, tip pointed at her heart, and held it there. "It agreed," Luna breathed. "It took the frame. It didn't twist it." Rose let out her breath. The proud thing had accepted her wish because she had wrapped it in beauty, not need. But the bent shoot still pointed at her, and its green now glowed the same pale color as the spirit. Rose touched the leaf. It was cold. The spirit had bound her wish to the garden's life. If the plants died, so did the promise. "You've tied yourself to it," Luna said, quiet now. "The wish lives only as long as the garden does." Rose looked at the small row of shoots by the dark water. She had won the spirit's yes. Now she had to keep every leaf alive to hold it.
