Chapter 8

Rosie carried the fox home before dark. She set it beside the spore's pot inside her mushroom cottage, where the pink cap leaned toward every draft. She waited for warmth to fill the room. It did not come. The fox paced the floor. Its nine tails twitched. Its gold horn stayed dim. Cold breath drifted from its nose. The spore drooped lower. "Please," Rosie whispered. "Just breathe on it. That's all I need." But the fox pressed against the door and stared out at the marsh. It missed the crystal cave. Here nothing smelled right, nothing looked right. It would not settle, and while it stayed restless, no warmth would come. The spore had hours, maybe less. Rosie knelt and thought hard. A scared animal wants two things. Food it trusts, and a place that feels like its own. She had both, if she was clever. She went to her larder and took down a bundle of cured meat strips, dark and savory. She laid one on the floor an arm's length from the fox. "Come," she said softly. The fox sniffed. It stepped closer. It ate. While it chewed, Rosie worked fast. She remembered the cave floor, pale and smooth like fur. She pulled her soft rabbit fur blanket from her bed and shaped it into a nest near the spore. She folded the edges high, the way the cave walls curved around the sleeping fox. Then she gathered a cluster of blue and purple hydrangea blooms from her windowsill and tucked them around the nest. Their damp petals smelled like the marsh water the fox had left behind. The fox finished the meat and lifted its head. It caught the scent of the flowers. Its ears swiveled. It walked to the nest, slow and careful, and sniffed the fur, then the blooms. Something in its body loosened. It turned three times and lay down. Its nine tails spread across the soft fur. It sighed. Rosie held her breath. The gold horn began to glow. A gentle heat rolled off the fox and filled the small round room. It reached the spore. The pink cap lifted. Its color deepened from pale to bright rose. Rosie laughed, then covered her mouth. The fox watched her with calm amber eyes. It was home now. Its warmth would not stop. She sank down beside the nest and touched the spore's firm cap. "You're safe," she told it, keeping her daily promise of words. The spore held steady in the fox's endless heat. She had done it. The last living spore would not freeze again. Then a knock struck the wooden door. Three slow raps. Rosie froze. No neighbor lived this near the marsh. Only one person hunted the white fox with the golden horn. The old fairy had followed her home.
