Chapter 1

Rowan Crimsonmane had run out of room. Two dozen rescued creatures crowded the small clearing where he kept them safe, and the winter wind cut through the thin lean-tos he had built. A wounded unicorn foal shivered under his cloak. A tiny drakefly, its wings still torn, clung to his shoulder. He had pulled each of them from traps and floods and hunters. He had promised them a home. He had never had the land to give one. So he went to his clan and asked for it. The elders met him in the old council ring at dawn. Rowan set the foal down at their feet. He did not speak first about himself. He spoke about the fox kit that had nearly frozen last week. He spoke about the flowers he'd rescued from a burning meadow, now wilting in a cracked pot. "I can heal them," he said. "But I cannot keep them alive in mud and rope." He asked for land. Enough to build on. Enough to last. The eldest of the clan studied the shivering foal for a long moment. Then she looked at the scars on Rowan's arms, the marks of every rescue. "You have given these creatures more care than most give their own kin," she said. "Take the eastern hectares. Build what you promised." Rowan did not waste a day. He hauled timber from the ridge. He split logs and raised beams. His clan came to help, drawn by the work and the strange procession of animals watching from the grass. Week by week, a great hall rose from the ground. Its walls were deep forest green. Its rooms spread wide and separate, so every creature could have its own quiet space. He built low doors for the fox kit and tall arches for the unicorn foal. He hung baskets near the windows for the drakefly to rest its healing wings. When the last shingle went on, Rowan led his creatures inside. The foal walked without a limp now. The fox kit curled by the hearth. He stood in the center of the huge green hall and let himself feel, for one moment, that he had done it. They were safe. They were warm. The promise was kept. That night a horn sounded from the western edge of the clan lands. A rider reached the hall past midnight, her horse blown and foaming. She was a scout Rowan knew, mud to the knees, eyes wide. "Trappers," she gasped. "A whole camp of them, moving through the deep woods. Cages on wagons. Dozens." She gripped the doorframe. "They're taking everything that moves, Rowan. And they're heading this way." Rowan looked back at his full, warm hall. He had built a home at last. Now something was coming to empty the forest that fed it. He reached for his cloak.
