Chapter 1 of 4

Rowan knelt in her mother's closet and lifted the sealed box into her arms. She had avoided it for weeks. Tonight she carried it across the yard to her shed, the one place that was only hers. Inside, lanterns lit her research board and the careful life she had built around one missing answer. She cut the tape. Letters spilled out, yellowed and creased. She sorted them by date, the way she sorted everything. Halfway down the stack, a small symbol caught her eye. A white fox, inked in the corner of one page. Quick, sharp, alert. Rowan stilled. She pulled the torn photograph from the inside of her jacket, the one she had carried since she was sixteen. She turned it over in the lantern light. There, faint along the ripped edge, was the same white fox. The same ink. The same hand. She pinned the photograph to the board. She pinned the letter beside it. She drew a red line between them with a shaking marker. Three years of guessing collapsed into one clean match. The man her mother hid had signed his name in pictures. Rowan sat back on her heels. The shed felt smaller now, and the world outside it larger. She had her proof. She could no longer pretend she wasn't going.
