Chapter 1

The claw marks stopped three steps from her door. Rowan Thorne knelt in the frost and pressed his fingers into them. Five deep gouges, still dark at the edges. The shadow-beast had come for her last night while she slept, and it would come again. He had hunted it through Irondrift for a week. Now it hunted her. Rowan had killed bears and wolves, but this thing left no body to fight, only cold and torn wood. He could not sit outside her door forever. He needed her somewhere the beast could not reach. His wolf pressed against his leg and growled at the marks. The gray fur caught the weak morning light and shimmered. "I know," Rowan said. He rested his hand on the animal's head. "I can't guard her and hunt it both." There was only one man in Irondrift who knew how to hide a person from a thing made of shadow. Rowan hated the thought of asking him. He rose and started toward the forest anyway. The cabin sat deep among the trees, timber walls dark with age, a thin ribbon of smoke rising from the stone chimney. Rowan knocked. The door opened on a wall of cold that rolled out over the porch. Hale Sorrow stood in a white fur cloak, ageless and pale, studying Rowan the way a man studies weather. On the table behind him sat a clay pot with a single flower blooming in it, bright red against all that gray. "You look tired," Hale said. "Come in. Don't touch the flower." Rowan ducked under the low frame. The wolf would not enter and stayed on the porch. "A shadow-beast marked her door," Rowan said. "I've tracked it for days. I can't kill it and keep her safe at the same time. They say you know how to hide someone from it." Hale walked to the flower and turned the pot a quarter turn, patient as a clock. "Shadow follows warmth," he said. "It smells a beating heart the way you smell smoke. Bring her here. This cabin runs colder than the grave. The beast won't find a spark to chase inside these walls." He looked up. His blue eyes did not blink. "But warmth is my price. She stays in the cold, and she stays quiet, or I put her out." Rowan's jaw tightened. He thought of her shivering under this pale man's roof. He thought of the claw marks by her door. "Done," he said. He brought her to the cabin that afternoon. She crossed the threshold and gasped at the cold. Hale set a single blanket by the hearth that held no fire. "She is safe here," he said. "And she is mine to watch until you finish your hunt." Rowan gripped his knife and stepped back onto the porch. His wolf rose beside him. She was safe now. But he had left the woman he loved with a stranger who ruled the winter, and the beast was still out there, hungry and free.
