Russel and Roxie's Arc

Roxie froze at the edge of the clearing, nose twitching. Russel skidded to a stop behind her, kicking up dust. "I smelled it first," he announced, which was a lie. Roxie ignored him. She was tracking something older than both of them — the scent of the legendary garden that gave cats nine extra lives. And it was close. The trail led to a chained wooden pole, its rusted charms swinging in the breeze. Past it loomed a tall stone monolith, blue crystals humming softly. Roxie's fur lifted. "This is the source," she whispered. Russel sniffed the pole, sneezed, and declared, "Mine." The scent pulled them up a slope to a crumbling domed building. Faded star markings curled across its panels. Roxie pressed a paw to the symbols. Russel squinted hard, then harder. "It clearly says go left," he said. It did not. Neither of them could read a single mark. Russel scratched at the door. "Easy. We jump in and figure it out." Roxie flicked her tail. "No. We need someone who reads old things." Russel groaned. He hated when she was right. He hated more that he was about to agree. A quiet voice spoke from the shadows. "You're looking at sky charts." Ezra Starfur stepped out, hood low, eyes gentle. Behind him, Squirt adjusted his hat. "Forgive the intrusion," Squirt said. "We heard scratching. Quite a lot of it." Ezra studied the panels. "These point somewhere. But the path is broken. You'll need a guide." Roxie sat up straight. Russel puffed his chest, pretending he'd planned this. The markings stayed unreadable — but the door to the next step had opened. They had help now. And the garden, somewhere beyond the broken trail, was waiting.
