Chapter 5

Ryland stood in the bunker's training yard and watched his three recruits move through the drill without hesitation. They'd learned the patterns he taught them—strike sequences, footwork, how to recover after a miss. One recruit drove her blade through the practice dummy's neck joint cleanly. Another pivoted and blocked an imaginary strike with textbook form. The third finished his combination and reset his stance without being told. Ryland crossed his arms and nodded once. They weren't perfect, but they were better than most hunters he'd seen stumbling through Deadville's streets. They listened. They improved. They showed up ready to work instead of making excuses. That was progress—the kind that turned survivors into something more. He called them over to the old fountain near the bunker's entrance. The stone was rusted and worn, its central statue streaked with corrosion, but it stood solid. Ryland pulled a metal flask from his coat and poured four small measures into dented cups he'd brought. The recruits watched him, uncertain. "You finished the training cycle," he said. "All three of you. That means something." He handed each of them a cup and raised his own. They drank together by the fountain, and for the first time since they'd started, one of them smiled. This was what a squad looked like—people who earned their place and knew it. Ryland felt the weight in his chest ease, just slightly. Later that evening, he stood alone in front of a gray stone block he'd carved by hand. Three names marked its surface, each letter cut deep and clean. His recruits had proven themselves worthy of being remembered. The memorial wasn't grand, but it didn't need to be. It showed that his squad existed now, that these hunters had earned their spot through sweat and discipline. Ryland ran his fingers over the carved names one last time. He'd started with nothing but guilt and a curse he couldn't undo. Now he had three people who trusted him enough to follow his orders into danger. It was a small squad, but it was his. And it was only the beginning.
