Chapter 8

Ryland gathered his two recruits in the bunker's main room at dawn. He needed them sharper, faster, ready for anything the streets threw at them. Trust came from knowing your squad could handle the worst moments without falling apart. He laid out his plan—double the training hours and add real pressure to every drill. The recruits exchanged glances but nodded. Good. They understood what loyalty required. Ryland would push them until their skills became instinct, until they moved as one unit instead of three separate hunters. No more waiting for recruits who might leave. He'd build this squad by making the ones who stayed unbreakable. He led them outside to the obstacle course behind the bunker. A digital timer sat mounted on a rusted metal bracket near the start line. The screen was cracked but still readable. Ryland pressed the rubber buttons and set it to count. "You'll run this course every morning," he said. "Beat your time or run it again." The first recruit stepped to the line. Ryland hit the start button and watched the numbers climb. The recruit vaulted over barriers, crawled under wire, scrambled up walls. When he crossed the finish line, Ryland showed him the number. "Remember it. Tomorrow you go faster." By midday, both recruits were drenched in sweat. Ryland pointed to the rain barrel he'd positioned near the training area. Weathered steel bands held it together, and a tap valve jutted from the side. "Fill your canteens," he said. The recruits took turns at the valve, gulping water and splashing their faces. The barrel meant they could train all day without stopping. No excuses about being tired or thirsty. Ryland filled his own canteen and drank. Every piece of equipment he added removed another reason to quit. The squad would function because he'd built the tools to keep them going. That night, Ryland climbed a tower he'd assembled from scrap metal and mounted a floodlight at the top. Shattered glass panels caught the moonlight, and corroded copper wiring snaked through the frame. He connected the final wire and the light blazed to life, flooding the yard in harsh white. Now they could train after dark. Now undead approaching from any direction would be visible before they reached the bunker. He climbed down and stood beside his recruits, all three of them lit by the tower's glow. The beam cut through the darkness and made everything clear. This was how you built loyalty—by removing every obstacle until the only choice left was to stay and become better. His squad would be unbreakable because he'd created the conditions that made weakness impossible.
