Chapter 1

Ryot Uplift needed forty quiet minutes and a flat surface, and the city had denied him both for three weeks. He was a goblin in full glam — gold liner, lacquered claws, a coat that caught light like a stage curtain — and he made his living telling crowds they mattered. Between gigs he was supposed to be writing the book that proved it. He wanted a copy on every library shelf in Roothaven. Right now he only had a battered leather folio stuffed with loose pages, half of them the self-worth chapter, which still read like a man arguing with himself. He found a bench behind the community hall and set out his own hand-lettered sign asking for quiet. He unbuckled the folio. Pages fanned out under his palm. He read the top line, crossed out a word, wrote it back in. Somewhere in the paragraph was the twelve-year-old he kept picturing, the one who had been told he was too small and too weird to matter. Ryot needed to tell that boy something true. He had one clean hour before his next speaking slot. He put the pen down and started. He made it four sentences. Then a small orange goblin in headphones rounded the bench, followed by a shaggy parade of puppet-limbed creatures in every color a dye vat could hold. Nibs Wirewhistle walked straight past the sign as if it were weather. "Ryot. It's Thursday. You said the draft by Thursday. You said that last Thursday too." A purple one climbed onto the folio. A green one sniffed the pen. Nibs kept going in short, plain bursts. "I told the girl at the exchange it would be done. I told Mrs. Fentwick. I told myself on Tuesday. Is it done." Ryot opened his mouth. Nibs added, "Say a real date." Ryot looked at his best friend, who had not slept right in weeks, and at the small chaos now sitting on his manuscript. He could not be angry. He closed the folio around the puppet goblin's foot until it hopped off. "I can't finish it here," he said. "I can't finish it anywhere in this city." He stood. He tucked the folio under his arm. He cancelled the evening gig in his head, and the two after it. "Give me a week. I'm going somewhere with a door." Nibs nodded once, already counting days on his fingers. Ryot walked toward the coach stand to ask about a cottage he'd heard of past the edge of town, where the noise stopped and the writing might start.
