Chapter 3

Sable came down from the cliffs with the poisoned stone still wrapped on her belt. She had not thrown it. The dragon lived, and now it slept without rage. But the village did not know that. They wanted a corpse. They wanted proof. Without it, they would march up with torches and pikes and finish what she would not. She found them gathered at the mossy watchtower, its stone furred green, its wooden rail crowded with men holding spears. They saw her empty hands. A woman shouted, "Where is the head? Where is the beast?" The crowd took up the question. Sable felt every eye press against her. She was small. She did not blink. "The dragon stood down," she said. "I could have killed it. I chose peace instead." The words landed like a slap. Someone spat. A man raised his spear. "Peace with the thing that burned the shepherd boy? You've gone soft, girl." The crowd surged toward the road that climbed to the cliffs. They meant to do it themselves. Sable stepped in front of them. "Then come. But bring your eyes, not your blades. See it first." She did not wait for their answer. She walked, and their anger and their curiosity pulled them after her. At the base of the roost she had spent the night working. Under the drooping branches of a willow, she had set the small living things loose. The baby rhino nosed the grass. A rabbit dotted with color hopped and spun in the open. Butterflies lifted in an orange cloud and settled on the willow's leaves. Nothing that could threaten. Nothing that would provoke. The villagers stopped. The dragon lifted its head above them. Spears came up. But the beast only watched the rabbit dance. Its great eye stayed soft. Its mouth made the low purring sound. It lowered its head and let the butterflies drift over its snout. No one moved. A child near the front laughed. The man with the raised spear slowly let it fall to his side. Sable unwrapped the poisoned stone. She held it up so all could see. Then she walked to the appleberry tree at the roost's edge, dug a hole among its roots, and buried the stone deep. She pulled a small carved token from her pocket, a flat disc she had whittled through the night, and pressed it into the fresh soil like a marker. "This is the pact," she said. "We stop hunting it. It stops burning us. We grow something better together." The crowd murmured. Not agreement, not yet. But the spears stayed down. An old farmer stepped forward and set his blade in the grass. Then another. The dragon watched them, calm, unhurt. Sable had bought the peace. But she saw the doubt still in their faces. The pact held for today. Tomorrow the dragon would still guard its hoard on the cliffs, and someone would remember what lay buried in that gold.
