Chapter 1

Sable Horne had eleven children waiting to read and not a single book to give them. She stood in the empty cell she had turned into a classroom. Once she had drawn these blocks herself, marked every wall and door for the regime. Now she taught inside them, in secret, because someone had to teach these forgotten children letters before the guards noticed. But you cannot teach reading with no words on any page. The children sat on the cold floor and stared at her empty hands. She had tried scratching letters into the wall with a nail. The children copied the shapes. They learned the marks but not the sound, not the meaning. A letter alone is not a story. Without whole words strung together, the lessons stalled. By the third day, the youngest ones stopped coming. That night a boy in an orange work crew jumpsuit left something at her door. She had seen him before, the one who mended broken toys and never spoke first. He set down an old wind-up teddy bear with a brass key in its back. "He talks," the boy said, and slouched away before she could ask more. Sable knelt. The bear turned his head. His fur was worn thin, his red vest faded. A blue bow hung crooked at his neck. "You are the teacher," the bear said. "I am Theo." She nearly dropped him. "You can speak." "I can. I carried a map once. Scratched inside a box." He paused. "A rabbit copied it. Pencil in her teeth." Sable understood. A toy who knew letters. A toy who had watched words be written and had remembered them. "Can you say the words for these marks?" She pointed to the nail scratches on the wall. Theo studied them. "Cat. Run. Cold." He named each one. His voice stayed even, plain, sure. The next morning she brought the children back. She set Theo on the floor before them. She scratched a word into the wall and Theo spoke it aloud. The children matched the sound to the shape. They said it after him. A girl with a scabbed knee read her first whole word by noon. By dusk, six children could read three words each. Sable had her primer at last, and it breathed and spoke and remembered. But Theo's key had wound down as he worked. His voice slowed near sundown. His jaw stuck between syllables. "I run on springs," he said. His words dragged. "Each winding costs one. When the last is gone, I stop. For good." Sable stared at the brass key in his back. Her whole school now spoke through a toy who was slowly using himself up. Every lesson spent him. She had found her teacher, and every word he gave the children brought him closer to going still.
