Chapter 1
Sable Shadowmark bit down on a leather strap and waited for the pain to pass. The silver tattoos on his arms burned white-hot, twisting toward his shoulders like brands pressed fresh into his skin. He had not asked for these marks. He had woken with them months ago and never learned what they meant. Now he knew only one thing: they screamed whenever strong magic drew near. And something powerful was crossing the market square outside.
He pressed his back to the chapel wall and breathed through his teeth. The tattoos always did this. They flared, they warned, and he could not read the warning. A blind man holding an alarm bell. He had trusted people to help him once. Each one had lied or fled. So he suffered alone, watching for a threat he could not name.
The chapel had been his shelter. Sacred ground, quiet stone, the one place where he woke with no new mark. He had slept here three nights and stayed whole. But the burning meant safety was ending.
The door opened. Cold air rolled in ahead of the visitor.
A tall man stepped inside, frost-pale, ice-white hair, a black coat dusted with snow that did not melt. Flowers bloomed in his wake without his asking. A pale blossom unfurled on the stone threshold behind his boot, glowing soft and white. The man glanced down at it and frowned, as if the flower embarrassed him.
Sable's tattoos flared harder. He hissed and gripped his arm.
The stranger stopped. His eyes, pale as winter sky, dropped to the silver light bleeding through Sable's fingers. "Those hurt you," he said. Not a question. "They're reacting to me."
"Stay back." Sable's voice cracked around the strap.
But the man crouched, slow, keeping his hands open. "I can't stop what I carry. Flowers, cold, all of it. Believe me, I've tried." He tilted his head toward Sable's arm. "May I look? The marks brighten near power. That means they measure it. They're not a curse. They're a compass."
Sable stared. No one had ever offered an answer instead of a trick. Every instinct told him to run. He was so tired of running.
He let go of the strap. He held out his burning arm.
The stranger studied the shifting silver lines. "Here." He touched the air above one glyph, not the skin. "When they curl toward your heart, the magic is old and bound. When they reach outward, it's loose. Wild. Dangerous." He met Sable's eyes. "Right now they curl inward. I'm bound. You're safe from me."
The pain eased. Not gone, but readable now. Sable looked at his own arm and, for the first time, understood what it told him.
"Oryn Ashveil," the man said, and offered his hand.
Sable did not take it. But he did not pull away either. "You can read them," he said. "Then you'll teach me."
Oryn's mouth curved. "Slowly. You don't trust me yet."
"No," Sable agreed. "But I need you."
