Chapter 1

Sable Vorn had copied a thousand scripts, but she could not read the one burning on her own wrist. She pushed back her sleeve at the writing desk, alone in the attic above the bookshop. The mark glowed faint green under her skin. It had appeared a week ago, and each day it spread a little further up her arm. She dipped her pen and copied its shapes onto paper, hoping order would reveal meaning. The symbols meant nothing. Without something to compare them against, she was only guessing, and guessing felt like waiting to die. She knew where real references lived. The great hall of the royal scribes held shelves no bookshop could match. But apprentices did not wander the master archives after dark, and Sable had no permission. She wrapped her wrist, tied her satchel shut, and went anyway. The hall stood silent, its tall windows dark, its carved desks empty. Sable slipped between the bookcases with a stub of candle. She pulled down volume after volume, searching for any script that matched her mark. Dead languages. Trade codes. Coastal ciphers. None fit. Her candle shrank. Fear crept up with the cold. Then she remembered the maps. Her own satchel held a half-finished chart she had been copying for months, its coastlines careful, its labels strange. She had always assumed the odd letters near the border were a decorative flourish by the old cartographer. She spread the map beside her paper and held the candle close. The shapes matched. Line for line, curve for curve, the script on the map was the script on her wrist. Sable's hands shook. She traced the labels along the inked coast. They were not decoration. They were words in the same tongue that now marked her skin. Someone had written this language before, someone who had mapped real places with it. She copied the matching symbols side by side. Slowly, a few sounds took shape. She could not read it all, but she had a key now, a thread to pull. Her relief lasted only a moment. Voices carried from the entrance below. A lantern swung against the stone. The masters had found her candlelight. Sable stuffed the map into her satchel and pressed against a bookcase, heart pounding. She could not be caught here, not with a glowing mark she could not explain, not holding a map she now knew was more than a map. She had her first clue. But the map she needed to decipher belonged to a cartographer she had never met, and the footsteps on the stairs were coming closer.
