Chapter 4

The wolf did not charge. It watched Sable from the water's edge, nose lifted toward her glowing arm. Its dark coat blended into the reeds. Sable stayed still on the hummock. Her candle stub shook in her fingers. She had reached the end of her drawn map. Past this rest, the reeds hid every landmark. She could not steer by water she had never charted, and now she could not even move without the wolf following the light. She pressed her sleeve down. The glow pushed through the cloth. That was the flaw. The mark had led the wolf here, and the mark would lead it to the marked place if she ran blind. A voice came from the reeds behind her. "Don't run from a nose, girl. You can't outrun what you carry." Gandalf Grey pushed through the stalks, staff first, the faded ribbon dragging in the mud. He had followed the channel after her. His eyes moved between her and the wolf as if weighing two answers at once. He spoke low and doubled. "It smells the light. So we hide the light." "How?" Sable whispered. He pointed his staff at a shape far across the reeds. A broken tower stood against the sky, its stonework split, its top timbers fallen. "Old watch post. Thick walls. Get inside, shut the mark behind stone, and its nose loses the trail." He looked at her map. "And from the top, you'll see the water ahead. You draw what you can't reach by wading it." Sable understood. She could not chart the reeds from inside them. But from a height she could read the channel's whole curve at once. The tower gave her both a wall against the wolf and a view past her blank paper. They moved together toward the tower. The wolf paced their flank, slow, patient. Sable kept the hummock's edge under her feet where the mud held firm. She reached the base and slipped through a gap in the cracked stone. Gandalf jammed his staff against the door timber behind her. The wolf's claws scraped the wall. Its snout pressed the gap. Then the scraping stopped. The stone had swallowed the glow. Sable climbed the fallen timbers to the broken top. The reeds spread below her in the dark. She saw the channel bend north, then split, then run toward open country beyond her drawn line. She pulled out her map and inked what she saw. Bend. Fork. The far shelter of firmer ground. She filled the blank paper with a true path. When she finished, the map reached past this place at last. She could steer again. But the wolf still circled the tower below, and her glow still climbed her arm. The stone hid her only while she stayed inside it. The moment she stepped out to follow her new line, the nose would find her again.
