Chapter 2

Sage could not gather hybrids on her land yet. So she gathered coins instead. She needed something the council would notice, something no pass could touch. An old mansion stood empty near the wall, its walls thick as a fortress. She spent what little she had left and made a plan. If hybrids could not meet openly, they would work openly, under one roof, and earn wages no council could deny. She scrubbed floors and hung curtains. She hired hybrids the town had chased off wells and out of markets. The boy with scales carried firewood. A fox-born woman cooked. Sage turned the place into a house where adult guests paid for company, food, and warm rooms. It was not her sanctuary. But it was work, shelter, and a start. On the first open night, torches lit the stone courtyard. Guests filled the rooms. Coins clinked in the bowl by the door. Sage stood in her worn bikini top and short skirt, her rabbit ears high, and watched her people laugh instead of hide. For one hour, she let herself believe she had built something safe. Then the iron gate opened without a knock. Luna Hareborn walked across the flagstones. She moved like she owned the ground under Sage's feet. Chains hung from the walls above her, and the torchlight caught the fur along her long ears. She did not look at the guests. She looked at Sage. "You are clever," Luna said. "No gathering. Just business." "They earn their own coin here," Sage said. "No law breaks." Luna picked up the snack bowl by the door and set it down again, as if weighing it. "The council read your deed too," she said. "Hybrids sleeping under one roof. Hybrids eating at one table. That is a gathering, whatever you call it." Sage's stomach dropped. "They work. That is not a crowd." "The stocks do not care what you call it." Luna stepped close. Her voice fell low. "I could sign the order tonight. Every hybrid here would face the wood by morning." Sage looked at the boy with scales, at the fox-born cook. Fear moved through the rooms as guests noticed the speaker. She had not saved her people. She had gathered them into one place for Luna to find. "But I did not come to sign," Luna said. She studied Sage a long moment. "I came because you did something no one else dared. That interests me." "Then help me," Sage said. "Not for free." Luna turned toward the gate. "Close the house by dawn, or I close it for you. Come to the courtyard by the iron gate tomorrow. Alone. If you want a pass, you will learn what it truly costs." She left. The torches burned. Sage stood in the crowded rooms she had built, and knew she had to empty them by morning. Her house was already lost. Only Luna's offer remained.
