Chapter 19

Sage walked the new soil at dawn. Black earth stretched wide, deep, and empty. She had planted every rare seed her fox had gathered. She had nothing left to fill this ground. She knelt and pressed a handful of dirt through her fingers. Rich, ready, wasted. Somewhere in the wild grew plants no god had ever named. She had no way to reach them. A light fell across the field. It came from above, not from the sun. Sage looked up. A staircase of pale stone spiraled into the sky, its steps glowing gold. It had not been there a moment before. At its foot stood a stone marker carved with suns and moons. A voice rolled down the steps, deep and calm. "Sage Winterwood. Climb." She knew that voice. The father of the gods rarely called anyone by name. Sage set her hand on the cold rail and climbed. The steps hummed under her feet. At the top waited an old figure in a long cloak that dragged behind him, the hem trailing across the glowing stone. His beard was white, his eyes sharp beneath heavy brows. He watched her the way a farmer watches weather. "You have earned every patch of soil below," Aldric said. His stern face did not soften, but his tone was gentle. "Now the soil sits empty. You have no more seeds." "I've searched everywhere I can reach," Sage said. "The rarest plants grow where I cannot go." "Then you will go." He drew a leather journal from his cloak. A brass compass hung from its cover. He pressed both into her hands. Painted flowers circled the compass face, and its needle swung slowly, not toward north, but toward the far hills. "This needle points to living things no mortal has recorded. Follow it. Find the seeds. Write down all you learn as you go." Sage turned the compass. The needle steadied on a distant ridge, then drifted west, alive and searching. "It leads to the plants themselves." "Every one your garden lacks." Aldric folded his hands. "A garden of all things cannot be filled by luck or by a fox's nose. You must learn each plant. Where it grows. What it needs. The journal will hold that knowledge." Sage opened the cover. The pages were blank, waiting. She thought of the wide dark soil below, and of all the ground she could finally fill. "I'll bring back every one." "You will bring back what you can carry," Aldric said. "Then return for more." He nodded toward the steps. "Go. The needle grows restless in your hand." Sage descended. When her feet touched the field, the staircase faded above her. She stood on the empty soil with the compass warm against her palm. The needle pulled toward the horizon. Her garden was no longer waiting on seeds she did not have. It was waiting on the journey ahead.
