Sailor Pluto's Arc

Sailor Pluto knelt at the base of the crystal spire and pressed her palm to the stone. The shrine looked worse than it had at dusk. She had spent the night patching cracks, setting new beams, polishing the silver tower until it hummed. Now the beams sagged. The tower's tip had thinned to a needle. Time moved wrong here, and her work aged faster than she could finish it. She pulled a fresh tool from the deep pocket of her work apron. Stone chisels and coiled conduits clinked at her hip. Above her, the six-winged bird that shared her post circled once and landed on a broken arch. It watched her with patient, golden eyes. "Again," she told it. She began again. By the second sunrise, the spire had unraveled at the seams. Tiny cracks raced up the crystal like frost. A cloudy sphere on the altar pulsed weakly, its glass webbed with new fractures. Pluto sat back on her heels. She did not curse. She studied. The shrine was not fighting her. It was forgetting her. Then the air shifted. A pale figure stood inside the ruined doorway, white robes still, hands folded. The woman did not smile. She looked at the sagging beams, the cracked sphere, the chisel in Pluto's hand. "You are repairing the wrong thing," she said quietly. "The stone remembers. The shrine does not." Pluto rose slowly. She set the chisel down on the altar beside the cracked sphere. For the first time in a long age, she was not alone at her work — and she understood, with a small, sharp ache, that fixing the walls would never be enough. The shrine needed a witness. It needed someone who remembered it whole.
