Chapter 3

The sphere pulsed brighter on the altar, drinking the stilled air. Pluto braced her staff. She did not know how to feed a heartbeat she had not meant to make. Then a soft light split the courtyard, and the twisted tree bent toward it. A figure stepped out of the light. Sailor Cosmos. Where her boot first touched the ground, a crescent mark burned itself into the stone, clean and yellow as a small moon. She carried two wands. One was dark, sharp, its core a pink star caged in violet petals. The other was bright, crowned with a curved moon and quiet stars. She set the bright one down at the edge of the altar like an offering. "For after," she said. "First we quiet what you woke." Pluto nodded. She lifted her staff. Cosmos raised the dark wand. "Together," Cosmos said. "You hold the time. I hold the dark." Pluto understood. Her spell alone had fed the sphere. Two spells, braided, might cage it instead. "Chronos Typhoon!" Green wind spiraled out. "Cosmic Dark Seal!" Violet light wrapped the wind like thread on a spool. The braided storm struck the sphere. It did not shatter. It shrank. Smaller, smaller, until it hung above the altar like a held breath, dim and slow, its heartbeat now a whisper. Pluto lowered her staff. The shrine stood. The sphere was contained, not gone. Cosmos picked up the bright wand and pressed it into Pluto's hand. "It will hold for a while," she said. "Use this to begin the real work." Then she was gone. Only the crescent mark remained in the stone, and a tool Pluto had never held before, waiting to be understood.
