Chapter 5

The plaza emptied of danger, but a new swarm closed in. Reporters pushed through the broken seats, microphones out, cameras hot. They shouted her name. The name. Venus clutched the little tiger's eye statue and tried to walk toward the stage door. Hands grabbed her sleeves. Lights blinded her. Her next round started in twenty minutes, and she could not move ten feet. "Miss Venus! Are you really a Sailor Scout? How long have you been lying?" The questions stung worse than the daemon's claws. She had wanted to be a girl with a song. Now she was a headline. The stage door felt a hundred miles away. Then the air went cold. "Mercury Aqua Mist!" A pale blue fog rolled out from a slim figure on the edge of the crowd. It poured between bodies and swallowed the cameras whole. Reporters stumbled, blind. A gloved hand caught Venus's wrist. Sailor Mercury pulled her close, calm as a held breath. "Hold on. Sailor Teleport." Light folded around them. The plaza vanished. They landed inside a low room of reinforced steel, narrow glowing slits along the walls — the hidden bunker the Scouts used when the world got too loud. Venus sank to her knees on the cold floor, still holding the statue. Behind her, on the plaza stones, Mercury had left a small marker etched with copper circuits, already pulsing to scramble any footage of their exit. Sailor Pluto stood waiting by a console, arms folded. A taller presence shimmered behind her — a winged guardian with a quiet, regal stillness, and beside her, the faint silver image of Queen Serenity, hands folded. "You came back," Pluto said. "Good. Sit." Serenity's voice followed, soft. "You chose them over your secret. That was not a loss." Venus pressed her forehead to the statue. The competition was still happening without her. She had missed her round. But she was breathing, and she was here, and the people who knew her real face had not turned away. "I'll go back," she whispered. "As me. Whatever's left of me." Pluto nodded once. "Then we plan."
