Samuel Baker stood on his neighbor's porch for the third time that week, his folder of printouts tucked under one arm. She had asked about the dark house when no one else had. That small kindness was why he kept coming back. Today, when she opened the door, her face looked different. Tired. Maybe frightened. She invited him inside the cottage without a word. The windows were frosted over, and the warmth hit him immediately. She led him to the kitchen table and sat down, her hands shaking. Outside, through the window, Samuel could see the old wooden post at the edge of her garden. Its surface was scratched deep, the frost making the marks stand out like scars. She caught him looking. "I stood there that night," she said. "By the post. I saw someone at your house." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "Not your wife. Not your children. Someone else." She reached across the table and pulled a worn journal toward her. The leather binding was cracked, the pages yellowed. She opened it and turned it so Samuel could see. Dates. Times. Descriptions written in cramped handwriting. "I've been writing it down. Every night since. I was too scared to tell you." Samuel pulled the journal closer, his hands steady even as his chest tightened. The entries began two weeks before his family disappeared. A figure in the yard. Lights on when they shouldn't be. A car he didn't recognize. His neighbor had seen it all. She had been watching. For the first time since he'd come home to an empty house, Samuel had something real. Something the police couldn't ignore. He looked up at her, and she met his eyes. "Thank you," he said. She nodded once, and he understood that she had been carrying this alone until now. He wasn't alone anymore either.
