Chapter 2

The absinthe fountain gleamed against bare stone. Sandy walked the cellar one last time before midnight. The green glow fell on empty walls and cold floor. She had the drink. She had the door. But the room felt like a storeroom, not a secret. A powerful guest would sip once and leave. No one surrendered a secret in a place that looked like a cellar. She needed shadow and mystery, and she had none. Footsteps clicked on the stair. A young woman came down, blonde hair piled high, a pen tucked behind one ear. She wore a yellow suit too bright for a dark room. Sandy had hired her once, years ago, to write false invitations. This was Mia. She smiled like she already knew Sandy's trouble. "You built a wine shop," Mia said. She touched the bare wall. "Guests don't whisper in a wine shop." Sandy folded her arms. "Then tell me what they whisper in." Mia pulled the pen from behind her ear. She did not write. She pointed it around the room like a conductor. "Kill the lamps. Hang black cloth over the stone. Leave one candle per table. Let them see only each other and the green glow. People confess in the dark. They forget who's listening." Sandy watched her move. Mia had always been like this, playful and sharp at once. She never gave advice without a price. "And your fee?" "A seat at the first salon." Mia grinned. "I collect secrets too." Sandy weighed it. A clever woman at her table was a risk. But a bare vault was a bigger one. She shook Mia's hand. "Done. Tonight." They worked fast. Mia ran up the stair and returned with armfuls of black drapery she'd clearly brought ready. Sandy climbed a stool and nailed cloth over the cold stone. They draped the far wall so the fountain seemed to float in nothing. Mia set a single candle on each low table and snuffed every lamp but one. The room changed. Shadow swallowed the corners. The absinthe glowed like a green heart in the dark. Faces at the tables would float close and warm while the walls vanished. Sandy felt it in her chest. This was no cellar now. This was a confessional. "Better," Sandy said. Mia tucked the pen away. "They'll tell you anything in here." By midnight the first guests came down the stair. A magistrate. A banker's widow. Two in masks. They paused at the door, breathed the dark, and softened. They sat close to the candles. They drank. They leaned in and began to talk. Sandy poured and listened. The vault had its allure now. But Mia sat among the guests, pen hidden, eyes bright, writing nothing yet missing nothing. Sandy had bought her dark room with a seat at her table. Now a woman who sold secrets knew exactly where the richest ones were spoken.
